Corrections

History:

The jail was moved to the current location in May of 1988. Approximately thirty (30) inmates made the move from the old jail which was located in the Levy County Court House. In the years prior to 1986, the jail had always been under the management of the County Sheriff. After the move in 1986, the Board of County Commissioners decided to manage the operations of the jail, which they did until January 1, 1993.


Logistics:

The Levy County Jail has a work force of fifty (50) staff members. It is comprised of thirty-one (31) shift personnel, two (2) mail and property officers, one (1) human resource officer, three (3) medical personnel, three (3) transport officers, three (3) classification officers, one (1) environmental officer, two (2) maintenance personnel, one (1) computer administrator, one (1) admin secretary, one (1) lieutenant, and one (1) Captain.

Administration:

The Levy County Jail operates under the management of Sheriff Johnny Smith. The Board of County Commissioners on January 1, 1993 gave the Sheriff's Office control of the jail. Upon accepting management responsibilities of the jail, the Sheriff's Dpartment appointed Captain Mike Johnson as the Jail Administrator. Captain Johnson has one Lieutenant who helps in the daily operation of the facility. Lieutenant Michael Sheffield who is the Chief of Security.


Jail Capacity:

The Levy County Jail has a maximum capacity of 296 inmates.

Jail Living Conditions:

The Levy County Jail is a non-smoking facility without access to televisions or newspapers. Inmates receive canteen products twice a week. Visitation is limited to Saturdays and Sundays with contact visits approved every six (6) months. Contact visits are for sentenced inmates only. Non sentenced inmates do not receive contact visits. Food is prepared by an outside vendor, ABL Food Service, out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Inmates are allowed 3 hours a week recreation, weather permitting.. The jail does not own weights or weight machines. Recreation is limited to basketball or volleyball.


Shifts:

The Levy County Jail employees work twelve (12) hour shifts. 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 6:00 A.M. which is rotated every three (3) months. They work two (2) days one week and five (5) days the next week, which gives them every other weekend off.


Medical:

The Levy County Jail has one (1) R.N. and two (2) L.P.N.'s. The medical facility is in operation ten (10) hours a day seven (7) days a week. We contract monthly with an outside medical facility for physician services.


Salaries:

The starting salary for beginning correctional officers is apx $24,000 annually. Officers with experience work six (6) months at starting pay and are then given credit for past experience. Example, if an officer worked ten (10) years at another facility and then came to work with the Levy County Jail, the officer would receive credit for five (5) years experience which would move him/her to a step five (5) pay grade.


Budget:

The budget for the 2003-2004 fiscal year is $3,110,028.00.
