Sheriff of Levy County

Sheriff Johnny Smith

Sheriff

The county Sheriff is responsible for law enforcement on the county level. Sheriff's deputies carry out most of the law enforcement duties while the Sheriff, an elected official, manages their activities. The Sheriff is employed by the county and is an elected position. He or she acts in role similar to a police chief in a municipal department. Deputies serve under the Sheriff in a similar role to that of uniformed police officers. The Sheriff has jurisdiction over the entire county to include the municipalities.

Johnny Smith has served as the Levy County Sheriff since 2001 and is serving in his third term as Sheriff of Levy County. Sheriff Smith began his law enforcement career in 1982. In 1986 he started with the Levy County Sheriff’s Office as a patrol deputy, working his way through the ranks, then on to the Criminal Investigations Division, as an Investigator Sergeant before being elected as Sheriff.
